Shoulder Problems

0

Hi. I have recently hurt my shoulder by falling down my deck stairs while it was raining and landing on the wood that surrounds my pool. My mother doesn't believe in doctors, so she won't take me to see one, but she says that I probably sprained my shoulder. What should I do???? I'm in a lot of pain. Please help!!!!

Are you a minor? If so, your mother has an obligation to get you medical help. You could have broken your collar bone, or torn your rotator cuff (which is what I did in a fall, and it's EXTREMELY painful and your arm needs to be in a sling for six weeks, followed by physical therapy). If she won't get you to a doctor, call a trusted adult friend or neighbor and tell them the situation. You could suffer permanent damage if this goes untreated.

If it's hurting much worse than other injuries you've had then find a family friend to take you to the doctor if your mom won't. You know your body so if you think this is worse than a sprain it probably is. I got a similar reaction by one of my parents after I injured my ankle as a teen. They thought I was being a wuss and making a fuss over nothing. When I finally saw a doctor it turned out I had fracture in addition to the sprain. So yeah, if your body is telling you to see the doctor go see the doctor sooner than later. On the other hand, if it just feels like a sprain then you probably can skip the doctor.

Until you see a doctor, or if you decide not to see one, follow RICE. That stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Don't overwork your shoulder, ice it a few times a day, and wrap the injury (you'll need help on that). Since it's your shoulder you're probably okay on the elevation. RICE will help with the sprain but it won't fix other injuries. You can also take anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen.

go see your school nurse. and if you're not in school, you're old enough to go the doctor on your own.
