Making fun of others when did that become cool ?

there is a lady I work with and she always talks horrible about people .She also makes fun of people really bad .what I dont get is that everybody thinks she is cool and wants to talk to her and hang with her .WHY?? I heard her making fun of me today I was so upset she had everybody laughing . I felt horrible and embarassed. she didnt know i heard her making fun of me . Why do people think this lady is cool ? She is that type to smile in your face and talk about you as soon as you leave. why dont people notice this ?

People probably DO know she does this and they don't want to be the target, so they are trying to stay on her good side. She's a social bully. Next time you overhear her talking about someone, take one of your co-workers aside and calmly tell them, "It's just a matter of time before it's you." They may laugh or say something snide, but it will put a flicker of doubt about this woman in their brain. People eventually get tired of bullies. If you feel bold, though, you could speak up when the comments are being made. If you do it consistently, it could take some of the air out of her balloon and spoil her fun a bit. It won't make you popular, but it's a step in the right direction. Say something like, "It takes a real coward to talk about someone behind their back like that."
