find out if in jail?

Is there a way to find out if someone is in jail? Last I heard about someone was they were in jail. I did not inquire why this person was in jail since we parted as friends. This person had a few thousand dollars in traffic tickets (lived in big city where parking was limited) so I thought maybe it was due to that. I am just wondering if this person is still in jail. Is there some kind of database that you can check if someone is in jail?

if you know what area they are in, or which jail, there might be a website. i know in san diego county, you can check http://apps.sdsheriff.net/wij/wij.aspx so other areas might have similar information. just google for it.
