Facebook chat etiquette

Someone I've been chatting with on facebook hung up on me twice and never gave an explanation or apology, the first time he said their was a power outage, after I asked. Then the second time, no apology or explanation was given. Should I be angry? Is this rude?

Is this person a friend or acquaintance? It sounds like this person is giving you subtle message that they would rather not talk to you. It is easier just to hang up than to explain that they prefer not to talk to you.

yeah, it's a little rude to disappear with no explanation. sometimes i have to bail out of a chat quickly because i have kids and stuff comes up and they start yelling in the next room, but you should always get at least a basic explanation "gotta run bye!" if not...they probably aren't into the chat.

Yes it is rude, no you shouldn't be angry. It happens a lot to us and we feel there is just no point in taking it personally. We wish there was a standard etiquette that everyone adhered to in IM (facebook or otherwise), but the fact is, there are far too many people who think it is acceptable to simply drop out of a conversation without so much as a goodbye. What you need to remember is that conversations online are not like conversations in real life and many people can have three or more conversations going at the same time.(bunny is great at it, bluewolf is not) They simply let conversations go without a thought as to the feelings of the other person. There are myriad reasons why people end conversations abruptly so we just let it go. But we do wish that people would have the courtesy to at least let us know that they are leaving. Hope that helps.
