clogged toilet

If a toilet clog was caused by toilet paper, will the toilet paper break down after a few hours? I do not know how to unclog a toilet. I am hoping if I wait, I will be able to flush the toilet without it overflowing.

The toilet paper probably isn't going to go away completely, so you will have to unclog the thing.

If you've got a decent amount of water in the toilet bowl already, don't add any. If you have no water or only a small amount you can add some warm water with a bucket.

Then try using a plunger to get the clog out. This can get a little messy and gross so wear some ratty clothes and a pair of gloves.

If that doesn't work you might try a plumbing snake (which you try to push through the clog). Personally, I've never had a clog the plunger couldn't solve. Sometimes it's taken a while to fix a clog with a plunger, but it always seems to work.

If it flushes normally after you've attacked the clog then you're good to go.

The toilet will not overflow if you turn the shut-off valve handle off. That's the knob that's behind your toilet, connected to the tube running into the wall, normally on the left side. So if you decide to flush after you think you've fixed the clog, but the toilet is in danger of overflowing, just turn that valve to stop the incoming water. Then try unclogging the toilet again.
